Jacksonville drivers registering or titling a vehicle in 2026 can run into fees from a $2.95 online credit card charge to a $225 initial registration fee, depending on the transaction. The same state fees apply in St. Augustine and the rest of St. Johns County, though each county tax collector handles its own payment options.
Buying a car or moving to Florida usually costs far more than a routine annual renewal. Here are seven fees worth knowing, counted down from smallest to largest, using the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' fee charts and the Duval and St. Johns tax collectors' websites.
No. 7: $2.95 to renew online with a credit card
The Duval County Tax Collector charges a $2.95 convenience fee per tag when you renew online with a credit card. E-check payments are free, so paying from your bank account avoids the charge.
Renew through the official county site, taxcollector.jacksonville.gov in Duval or sjctax.us in St. Johns, rather than a third-party website.
No. 6: $5 temporary plate for new residents
If you've moved to Jacksonville and your out-of-state tag is expired or expires within 30 days, the Duval Tax Collector sells a 30-day temporary plate for $5, giving you time to finish the paperwork.
No. 5: $10 for a fast title
Need your paper title the same day instead of waiting for Tallahassee to mail it? Both the Duval and St. Johns tax collectors offer fast title service for an extra $10.
St. Johns County says fast titles are for simple, clean transactions such as transfers and duplicates. Duval says the service is available at all of its locations.
No. 4: $15 a year for a personalized plate
A personalized plate adds a $10 annual personalized fee plus a $5 processing fee, according to the state's fee chart. Specialty plates that support causes and organizations carry their own annual fees, so check the amount before you order.
No. 3: $20 penalty for a late title transfer
Bought a used car? In Duval County, the title transfer must be completed within 30 days or a $20 late fee applies, the tax collector says. That's on top of the normal title fee and any sales tax you owe.
Registration renewals have their own deadline. Florida registrations expire at midnight on the owner's birthday, and Duval says a late fee applies after the 10th day of the month following your birthday.
No. 2: $28 for a new metal license plate
The state charges $28 for an original license plate. You won't pay it every year, but Florida requires plates to be replaced every 10 years, with a new plate issued in the 10th year, according to the Duval Tax Collector and FLHSMV.
No. 1: $225 initial registration fee
The biggest fixed charge on the list is Florida's $225 initial registration fee. The Duval Tax Collector warns new residents that a first-time Florida plate purchase may require it.
It doesn't apply to every transaction. If you're replacing a car, ask whether you can transfer your existing plate, which can affect what you owe.
What does a Florida title cost?
Title fees are separate from registration. The state's 2026 title fee schedule lists:
| Title transaction (no lien) | Electronic title | Paper title | Fast title |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer of an existing title | $75.25 | $77.75 | $85.25 |
| Original title, new vehicle | $77.25 | $79.75 | $87.25 |
Loans, out-of-state titles and other situations can change the total.
What about a normal annual renewal?
Most drivers renewing an existing registration won't owe most of these charges. Florida registers cars based on weight, so the amount on your renewal notice depends on your vehicle. To register or renew, you also need proof of Florida auto insurance.
The bottom line
- Renewing: watch your birthday deadline and pay by e-check online to skip the $2.95 fee.
- Buying used: transfer the title within 30 days to avoid the $20 penalty.
- New to Florida: budget for the $225 initial registration fee, a $28 plate and a title fee of about $75 to $87.
How we did this
Jax Times used FLHSMV's Motor Vehicle Fee Chart (Fees-03) and Schedule of Title and Lien Fees (Fees-01), FLHSMV's license plate page, and the Duval and St. Johns County tax collectors' vehicle, payment and new-resident pages. The countdown lists individual charges, not a total bill, because which fees apply depends on your vehicle and transaction.
