What the rip current risk means

  • Low: the risk is low, but the National Weather Service warns that life-threatening rip currents often occur near groins, jetties, reefs and piers.
  • Moderate: life-threatening rip currents are possible in the surf zone.
  • High: life-threatening rip currents are likely in the surf zone.

If you're caught in a rip current, the Weather Service advises staying calm, not fighting the current and swimming parallel to the shore until you're out of it. Swim near a lifeguard when you can. More rip current safety from the National Weather Service.
